On Saturday morning, January 23, 2021, Lizzie Lue (Williams) Gordon quietly transitioned from this life into Eternity at her home with family (Blythewood, SC.) She was 97 years old.

She was born to the late Mrs. Minnie Kirkland Williams Cooper and the late Mr. Linzy Williams on December 28, 1923 in (Waynesboro) Burke County Georgia. She was reared in the Waynesboro area, attended Burke County Public Schools; and, graduated from Waynesboro High & Industrial School.

Mother Gordon joins in Heaven her husband, Mr. Robert W. Gordon; her daughter, Dr. Vivian C. Pennamon; her sister, Mrs. Alice Mae Williams and brother, Mr. Linzy Williams.

In addition to being a dedicated and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and “Big Mama” (Mama Lizzie Lue) to a host of other extended family, she also loved to “Go” (travel). Throughout her entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her.

Mother Gordon gave her life to Christ at an early age and dedicated her life to serving God as a member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church (Waynesboro, GA), where she served for over 40 years in various positions, including Mother of the church, Finance Secretary, Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher, Bible Study Teacher, and more importantly “Mentor”.

After relocating to South Carolina with family, she joined Perfecting Faith Church, Blythewood, SC. where she served on the Mothers’ Board, as Senior Mother.

Mother Gordon’s genuine love for people was reflected in her career choices, professional organization memberships & social affiliations.

Prior to retiring (26 years of service) from the position of Director, Burke County Equal Opportunity Agency, Mother Gordon worked as an Avon Representative; Manager of Hunter’s Grocery Store; Supervisor & Coordinator for various federal programs such as Emergency Food & Medical Services, Job Corp and the Burke County Neighborhood Service Center. Social affiliations/Memberships: Board of Directors for Chamber of Commerce, Planned Parenthood, Boggs Community Development Corp, Burke County Black Churches Benevolent Fund and Care South Home Health Agency.

She was a ranking officer in the American Legion Auxiliary, Heroines of Jericho and Eastern Stars, the CSRA Girl Scout Council, The Burke County Improvement Association, The Burke County Housing Improvement, Inc., the Senior Citizen Council, Georgia Community Action Association, Eastern Georgia Farmer’s Co-op, Inc., Retired Educators Association; Burke County Branch NAACP – receiving various recognitions and rewards for her tireless community service. Her most cherished recognition was being honored with her own special day by Burke County Georgia Client Council – Lizzie L. Gordon Day (2010).

Mother Gordon was the Matriarch of five generations. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Luvenia (Lisa) Gordon-Dukes (John), Blythewood, SC and Stepson, Robert Gordon, Jr., San Antonio, TX., grandchildren: Alexcia (a.ka. Fran) Delley (Jay), Augusta, GA; Calvin Pennamon (Milena), Denver, CO, Lhamon (a.k.a. Drew) Gordon and Robert Pennamon, Jr., Columbia, S.C., great Grandchildren: Cydney Delley and Jayson Delley, Augusta, Ga.; Kalina Pennamon and Danika Pennamon, Denver, CO; Alicia Gordon and LaMario Dukes, Blythewood, S.C., nephews: William (a.k.a. Bill) Warthen, Brooklyn, NY; Vince Gray, Waynesboro, G.A., great Niece: Georgia Lou Daniels, Waynesboro, G.A., god-daughter; Mrs. Thomasina Godbee, Hephzibah, GA.
